Been a long time...

Can't believe how quickly time flies.  Joe's Etsy shop Culture Recycling has been open for well over a year.  Unfortunately, Joe and I have so many other projects on the back burner that his super rad shop doesn't get the TLC it deserves.
Tonight I've been finally adding new items to Culture Recycling.  Been way too long.

Next up, finally taking pics of the new stamps!

A Lovely Time at Alex & Ika Restaurant

I write a weekly restaurant feature on local restaurants in Oneonta and had such a fabulous lunch at Alex and Ika's Restaurant in Cooperstown that I had to blog about it, but haven't had the time until now.
Alex & Ika's is rare find on this side of the Catskills. Not that there aren't some wonderful restaurants in this area, but Alex excels at balancing the fine line between appealing to the gourmand and casual diner. How does he pull this off?
My husband and I sat down with executive chef and owner Alex Webster, his sons Oskar and Lukas, and PR extraordinaire, Elizabeth Huntington, to find out what has made Alex and Ika so successful over the years. He credits a reliable and happy staff, making everything from the
dressings to the soups from scratch, using key ingredients like coarse grain sea salt, and creating an establishment that is family friendly for customers and his own family.
Sure, these things do make a difference. But the food had an attention to detail that isn't common in this area. My eggplant was cooked to perfection, with exactly the right proportion of cheese/sauce/eggplant/breading. Usually I find cheesecake a little garishly rich, but theirs is creamy but not overwhelming. I love that the fingerling potato fries weren't anything you would expect. They were mashed, crispy bites of deliciousness accompanied by a chipolte aioli dip that made ketchup seem overwhelmingly ordinary. And I could rave about the wine and drink list- amazing- but don't have enough space.
The restaurant also has character. Alex is also an artist and it shows. The mirrors and artwork and bar (erected from the wood of an old bowling alley) become part of the visual ingredient necessary to "dining out". There is a reason why I let my husband, Joe, take over as interior decorator at home- he's an artist and knows how to create ambiance.
One last reason to go. Alex and the kids and Elizabeth are incredibly nice people. Oh, and it's vegetarian friendly.

Musings on Deep Space Explorations

What I've been up to?  Traversing the universe with a lonely Astronaut who might be losing his grip on reality.

Recently I finished writing 2 poems to accompany Joe's Deep Space Exploration photo series.  This collaboration will eventually turn into a book and interactive art piece.  Right now I've been adding photographs from the series online for sale.  Really enjoying writing the descriptions for these pieces.  Maybe there's an astronaut lost in space inside my head.

Dear John,
So many strange and wondrous things to see. Don't know if I'm becoming delusional, having flashbacks of going to the arcade, or if there really is an 8 Bit universe. Wish you could find me to write back.
your brother,
the Astronaut

Dear Marie,
I'm lost somewhere in the Galaga Universe. Be home as soon as possible. Miss you and Spot.
love,
your favorite Astronaut

Nostalgia and Cassettes

There's something beautiful about vinyl albums.  There is an audible warmth that CD's never had.  You could experience the cover art- it is a photograph in your hands.  And big.  Everything bigger is more precious, right?  The process is there too.  Open the stereo lid.  Carefully remove the record and lay it on the turntable.  Gently apply the needle.  Effort was involved.  Senses were engaged.
Cassettes are a different matter.  The era of boom boxes, the walkman, and mixed tapes.  Music is suddenly portable and easy to use.  Not that it ever took a rocket scientist to operate a record player, but it did require a certain amount of finesse.  Even the 8 track wasn't as easily transportable.  The walkman fits in your hand.  You can even jog and listen to music with one!
Every now and then I buy a cassette at a yard sale.  Where did all of my tapes go?  I found Blondie tucked into the buffet at Grandma's house this summer.  Anyway, my car has a cassette and CD player, so it they are still functional.  Although the sound drives me a little kooky after a while and I switch back to CD.

Can't tell you how much I regret giving away all of the mixed tapes that friends and ex-boyfriends gave me.  It recorded an era of time, a moment of who they were with me.  That's more important than sound quality.

In Honor of Halloween...

Just posted Joe's 8 Bit Skeleton card in Blackbird and Peacock.  In the transition of moving all cards and journals from BBAC to the new shop.  Also have listed some skull journals, zombies and postcards.  Enjoying creating with the skull stamp- very inspiring.  My son likes that one.  Will be posting some Halloween cards, journals and postcards over the next couple of weeks.  Oh yeah!

Blackbird & Peacock

It's official- Blackbird and Peacock are now open for business!  A love of all things paper- journals, letters, pretty paper- helped spawn this new Etsy shop by husband and wife team, Hope and Joe Von Stengel.  The shop will have an eco-friendly edge, as many of the materials used will be recycled or created from recycled  and sustainable materials.
This new venture is a movement outside of the bigbadartcollective shop on Etsy, an opportunity to focus time and energy.  Right now Hope has been getting ready for the holidays by making cards for friends, as well as the shop.  Joe sold quite a few journals at the City of the Hills art festival in Oneonta, NY, so a little catching up and re-ordering supplies has kept us busy was well.
Take a look at our new store- a great place to browse for those with eclectic tastes!

Culturerecycling & the woes of summer

It's been a busy summer!  Most of the members of BBAC have been preparing for art festivals, gallery shows, weddings, and visiting family.  Not that we haven't been creating- but there has been little time to devote to the blog, list items on Etsy, tweet, flickr, facebook and whatnot.  I am desperately looking forward to the routine of getting things up and rolling again.
Right now, the biggest change for BBAC is Joseph Von Stengel devoting more time to his own Etsy shop, Culturerecycling.  The last couple of weeks, when he actually is at home, he's been creating some fresh new art.  Will be listed throughout September and October in this Etsy shop.

Below is a preview of his new series of work, 2089.  These digital photos, as well as the animals he manipulated for them, will be available this Fall.

Zombies Zombies Zombies

Romero's Night of the Living (1968) is the first zombie movie I recall watching.  A huge fan of more modern horror movies as a teenager, I don't remember thinking this classic was scary or entertaining.  Not until Dawn of the Dead came out in 2004 was I bit by the zombie bug.  A great film- never saw the original, but this one had me jumping up and down on the edge of the couch.
Quite a few memorable zombie films have come out that have stood out in the horror genre in the last 10 years: Shaun of the Dead, 28 Days Later (somewhat zombie-esque), I Am Legend (am I the only one who likes this movie?) and Resident Evil (I fell asleep during this one, but liked what I saw).  Rediscovering Sega's Zombies Ate My Neighbors and the very fun Bag O' Zombies Glow in the Dark made us recognize something a few years ago- zombies are IT.
Swept up by the zombie craze, Joe started taking pics of zombie figures and designed an 8-Bit zombie stamp.  Being a fan of stamping, I've utilized his stamp to create unique journals, cards, and post cards.  Zombies have survived the decade and are still going strong- looks like they are here to stay.  There are some really cool zombie related items on Etsy, but this one is my fav so far:  It's a really great print of a zombie-inspired painting: http://www.etsy.com/listing/47565406/zombie-portrait-procession-living-dead

Here is a moleskine journal that Joe stamped, which is listed on Etsy.  So much fun!

In the spirit of Earth Day!

Like our ancestors, humans are still recycling, upcycling or repurposing to get the most out of the resources available to us.  It is economical and realistic, beyond being idealistic.  I currently participate in two online trading sites, swaptree and paperbackswap, where users recycle media by trading with other members of this online community.  Not are we only reusing media that would otherwise sit on a shelf, but most of the members re-use packaging. Fantastic!
In the spirit of Earth Day I wanted to highlight a few of the items on Etsy that are created with the idea of recycling, upcycling or repurposing in mind.
Alyssa Jackson's upcycled jewelry is a hit in our hometown of Oneonta, NY.  She's been collecting game pieces to make pendants, rings, necklaces and earrings for over a year.  Her jewelry has a hip, romantic flair.

In the same spirit comes Diana Cozzens' creations.  Also romantic, yet more in the vein of 80's punk, a lot the jewelry Diana has created for the shop thus far is from discarded leather scraps originally meant for furniture.
A couple of weeks ago, I added some new blank cards on Etsy by Joseph Von Stengel to highlight Earth Day.  His 8-Bit Creations and Culture Catalogue Silhouettes images grace 100% recycled note cards, the brown ones are also 20% post-consumer and the white 100% post-consumer recycled.  Rad!

Happy Earth Day!

Hand-stamped!

Finally getting an image up of the shirt I hand-stamped.  I practiced mostly on clothing that had rips, stains, etc. using VersaCraft fabric ink stamp pads.  I was hoping to stamp over some of the stains and mask them with an image and was not successful.  After I heat-set the inked fabric, the stains (mostly olive oil from cooking) seemed to pop right out.
Another lesson- stamping on dark clothing is not recommended because it overwhelms the stamped image's color.  Yellow doesn't show up well on most colors, but works well on white.  Next time I'll try heat-setting on both sides of the image.
All-in-all I was pretty excited by the results.  The next day after removing the first batch from the dryer, I started on another.  Still stamping on postcards.  Going to list some artist trading cards that are original hand-stamped works by Joseph Von Stengel this week- just took some pics yesterday.  Keeping busy!

Back From Mardi Gras!

4 members of bigbadart just got back from Mardi Gras yesterday.  We had an absolutely fabulous time.  The people in New Orleans are wonderful, very friendly.  The Noma art museum was great- the Kathe Kollwitz exhibit there was amazing.  Really.  Unforgettable.
Today I can finally wash the clothes that were fabric stamped and I can't wait to list those as well- pics will be posted soon.
Tomorrow new pics of Etsy items will be taken.  Can't wait to put up some of Diana Cozzens' creations.  Beautiful leather jewelry and clothing.
Today I listed more work by Joseph Von Stengel and Alyssa Jackson.  Awesome!  http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=40773571

journals, necklaces, stamping- hmmm....

I love books- I can't imagine a time when staring into a computer screen could ever bring the same satisfaction as the act of turning a page.  The gentle whshhh of pages rubbing together, the dry feel of paper brushing against my fingertips.
Most of my writing done these days is on the keyboard, but if I'm spending some special alone time writing, a journal is a must.  Or for lists.  While leafing through some of my older journals, I'll find everything from short essays, poetry, recipes, and grocery lists.
This blue Space Invader's journal by Joseph Von Stengel is perfect for to-do lists or genius ideas.  Not only is it lined, but it's pocket-sized.  Great for spur of the moment inspiration.

The image below reveals another gorgeous piece of recycled jewelry by Alyssa.  I call it digging in the dark because there is something primitive and earthy about this piece.

I'm ending the day with thoughts about stamping.  Kind of late for me, but I'm considering hauling some clothes downstairs that are waiting to get stamped.  Fabric stamping is SO much fun.  My new obsession.  I'll post some pics soon!
